Description “This paper centers on three aspects of the Nobel Prize as a social institution: first, how they came to be preeminent among scientific awards; second, how identifiable contraints on the awarding process have brought into being a cadre of uncrowned laureates, peers of the official prizewinners in every respect except that of having won the award; and last, what getting the prize does for and to its laureates.”
