Description A one-volume collection, in the sumptuous manner still maintained in Japan, of the greatest of the traditional Japanese mathematicians, also known as Seki Kôwa (1642?-1708). Seki is known for, among other things, discovery of the true determinants, of “Bernoulli's numbers,” and of steps toward the theory of conic sections. His 29 treatises are set in modern type, with redrawn illustrations. There is an extended “reader's guide,” with 84 pp. of summaries and explanations in English. (N. SIVIN)
