Description Personal reminiscences of a group of young researchers in the laboratory of Hans Spemann in Freiburg, and especially of Hilde Mangold (1898-1924), whose joint paper with Spemann in 1924 reported the discovery of the organizer in the salamander embryo, one of the principal discoveries in experimental embryology.
