How the map is generated:
Shading is generated based on current (not historical) country boundaries.
The map is based on geographical subject terms tagged for each citation.
The hit count (not the citation count) is used to calculate the darkness of the shade for each country.
Sometimes a single citation adds multiple hits to a country. For example, Paris, France, and Europe each count as one hit for France. (The subject Europe provides one hit to each European country.)
