The Exegesis of Science in Twentieth-Century Arabic Interpretations of the Quran (2008)

unapi

For the physician Muḥammad Aḥmad al-Iskandarānī, nature?s secrets?equated with the Lord?s divine order?were riddles for men to uncover, and both science and the Qur᾽ān were there to help them. Focusing on a representative number of key popular Qur᾽ānic commentaries after Iskandarānī, this chapter explores this transformation and charts the changing relationship between discussions of science and modern exegesis in the Arabic and especially the Egyptian press of the twentieth century. The leading example of the genre was Ṭanṭawi Jawharī?s al-Jawāhir fī tafsīr al-Qur᾽ānal-karīm, or The Gems of the Exegesis of the Munificent Qur᾽ān, which was published in 26 volumes between 1923 and 1935. Charting the arc from ?Abduh to Jawharī and beyond, this chapter explores these new kinds of reconciliation that could be found between nature, science, and scripture in Qur᾽ānic exegeses over the course of the twentieth century.
